Looking to Move from CHSP to Support at Home?

Are your needs changing? It might be time to look at a move from CHSP to Support at Home?

As our needs change over time, many older Australians find that the help they receive through the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) may no longer be enough. With the introduction of the new Support at Home program in November 2025, there is now a clearer pathway for people who need an increase in level of care to remain living confidently at home.

How do you apply to move from CHSP to Support at Home?

The first step is a reassessment through My Aged Care. If you’re currently receiving CHSP services and your needs increase, you or a family member can request this reassessment. This helps determine whether Support at Home is more appropriate for you. A trained assessor will talk with you about your daily routines, health needs, safety at home, and goals for independence. If eligible, you’ll be approved for a Support at Home level that better matches your new situation. Funding levels range from 1 to 8.

Why people choose to transition

CHSP is designed for people who need entry-level support, such as occasional domestic assistance and home and garden maintenance. However, as circumstances change—such as following a hospital stay, the onset of chronic illness, mobility issues, or cognitive changes—people, including many of our Bethel Home Care clients find they often need more regular assistance and broader services. Support at Home is designed for those moments, offering a more structured approach to care that can grow with you over time.

The advantages of Support at Home versus CHSP

Support at Home offers several key benefits. It provides greater flexibility in how services are delivered, increased funding levels compared to CHSP, and improved continuity of care. This program also allows for a broader mix of services, including personal care, nursing support, allied health, and home modifications. Most importantly, it gives you greater choice and control, helping you remain safe, independent, and well-supported in your own home.

At Bethel Home Care we offer a wider range of services as part of the Support at Home package. These include the above, plus transport, meal preparation, shopping, social support and much more. See our website bethelhomecare.org.au for more information.
